The WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway plugin automatically conforms SCA without any additional configuration. Make sure that customers only need to authenticate all of these things if they really need them. If the customer needs to authenticate, this is done with reliable technologies such as biometric IDs and 3D Secure2.
About SCA
As part of the Second Payment Service (PSD2) directive ordinance, strong customer authentication (SCA) has been introduced in Europe to ensure secure online payment transactions.
The regulation requires two-way authentication for all online payment transactions. Transactions that do not meet the SCA authentication parameters can be removed from the affected bank.
Additional authentication must be implemented in the checkout flow to ensure SCA compliance is guaranteed for online payments. To fulfil an SCA request, you must verify the identity of a customer with at least two of the following two identities:
- Something the user KNOWS (e.g. password, pin)
- Something the user HAS (e.g. ID card, mobile phone)
- Something the user IS (e.g. biometrics)
How SCA changes the checkout workflow?
The checkout with SCA compliance may require additional authentication steps (dynamic authentication) in the checkout workflow.
- Payment initiation: To start a payment, customers must enter their card data and fill out the checkout form
- Prompt dynamic authentication: Strip Platform can check the need for authentication. Depending on your bank, use 3Desecure2 to start a single passcode or biometric ID for authentication
- Payment completion: Once the authentication is successful, the payment will be completed.
With SCA, customers will be forced to re-authenticate purchases with saved cards by returning to the website or app. This can be difficult for business systems to manage and irritate customers. This makes the register a complicated process. Apart from that, authentication procedures vary depending on the different locations, banks, and card networks.
