Vismaya Vijayan

You are finally here after learning a lot about WordPress and how WooCommerce can help you take your business to the next level. WooCommerce is a solid platform to start an online eCommerce site, it helps to set up your store by adding products, managing, and tracking stock, analyzing revenue, and checking the data security of your store. In the last few years, it has been proven that online stores gain a major profit, and WooCommerce plays a vital role in making it easier for you to set up and manage your store.

The purpose of this article is to help both new and experienced marketers since we will not only discuss how to add WooCommerce products but also look at how product recommendations affect store conversions.

Now, let’s get into the topic.

6 WooCommerce Products Types

Simple Product

The simple product type is the most basic type of product in WooCommerce, which is easy to create and understand. In most stores, you will find simple products which are unique and only come in one option (that is, they do not have variations).

Grouped Product

Grouped products are a set of multiple simple products sold together. This type of product can benefit customers from shopping for individual products separately. That is a parent product (acts as a single product) will come with multiple child products.

For example, if you consider a computer as the parent product, then you may add child products like; mouse, keyboard, CPU, UPS, and speaker. So here various simple products are clubbed to form a grouped product. Each of the products carries its own price, specifications, SKU,etc.

External or Affiliate Product

An external/affiliate product is one you feature in your online store but doesn’t belong to your store. Easily transform your online store into an affiliate program using external or affiliate products. Get commissions for advertising other stores’ products in your store.

Variable Product

The term variable product refers to a product that comes in different options, prices, and SKUs. Let’s say you sell a shirt that comes in 4 different colors; Red, Yellow, Blue, and Green. Each one comes in 4 different sizes and is made from different materials as well. Any of the combinations that a customer picks becomes a woocommerce product variation.

Virtual Product

Virtual Products are intangible and do not have digital entries. For example, any kind of services, subscriptions, warranties, or even Ebook, music,OTT platforms( Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.), are considered as Virtual products. Another main factor is that these products cannot be shipped or downloaded from any source.

Downloadable Product

Other than physical products you can sell intangible products like music, E-books, videos, PDF, etc. That means you are selling products virtually and your customers can download them, so these products are called Downloadable Products. Moreover, there is no hassle of stock running out or maintaining inventory, since everything is handled and stored in a web server. Just like virtual products, there is no need for downloadable products to be shipped.

How to Add WooCommerce Products?

The first step obviously is to install and activate WooCommerce, which you must have already done by now. And since you have gone through all WooCommerce product types now you can jump straight into the steps for adding a WooCommerce product.

There are different settings and unique features for each product type. Following our discussion of the different product types above, we learned that each type serves different purposes, and so their setup process also differs. Simple products and Variable products are the most commonly used product types. You can check out our other blog to learn how to set up WooCommerce Variable Products. In this blog, we’ll discuss Simple Products.

1. Add New Product

From WooCommerce admin panel navigate to Products and Add new Product.

2. Add Title & Description

For the created product type a title and description are to be displayed on the product page. The long description you provide should be relevant information about the product, that is it can be about the color, size, weight or height, shape, ingredient, etc. And make sure it is readable and understandable for the customer.

3. Choose Prefered Product Type

The default WooCommerce settings offers you 6 WooCommerce product types. From the product data tab you can choose your preferred product type.

By default the product type will be Simple Product. Depending on the product type you selected the fields below will change.

4. Fill in Product Data Tab

Other than the product description you filled above, the product metadata is important, as it includes every detail like product price, inventory, shipping details, attributes, etc. To create a simple product you basically have to fill out the General, Inventory, Shipping, and Attributes tabs.

General tab:Contains fields for filling in the regular and sale price of the product. The sale price can be scheduled for a period by choosing the start date and end date from the date picker.

Inventory tab: Fill in SKU(Stock Keeping Unit), which can manage stock details like stock quantity, backorders, and low stock threshold.

Shipping tab: You can enter all physical dimensions of the product you created here (weight, height, length, width). There’s also an option to choose shipping classes(if any). Certain shipping methods use shipping classes to group similar products together.

Attributes tab: On the attributes tab, you can add attributes to the product, if you have already created attributes globally, they will appear in the drop-down list.

Attributes are properties that describe a product. This is useful when filtering various products by category.

5. Add Short Product Description

A short description will be the first thing your customers notice when they scroll down through the shop page. So far, you have filled in all the important information about the product. As you scroll down, you can find a space to enter the Product short description.

Similarly to add the product’s long description, you can find every text formatting option here to tailor the material you write in. In addition to regular text, you may include external links, tags, and even shortcodes for the product.

6. Product image

“Seeing is believing”, is one of the sayings I remember while explaining about product images. Even if you spent all your time writing bold descriptions for your product, some customers would search for real product images to convince themselves to buy the product. Precisely a good quality product image can help you convert visiting customers to regular buying customers.

Add the best view of your product as the product image, to compel your customers to click on the product.

Simply upload the right images from your gallery, make sure to consider the below given point while uploading product images and gallery images.

Few tips to optimize your Product image:

  1. Consider your audience’s targets and preferences.
  2. Add professional photographs of the real product you are selling, with proper image quality and sizes.
  3. Pay attention to frame the images right, also don’t forget to place appropriate background colors in order to make your product stand out.
  4. Add a zoomed in image to show the quality of the product.
  5. Show how it’s used through images.
  6. Cover every angle of the product.
  7. Make sure not to include any additional texts or other graphics, since it may take away the attention from the product image.
  8. If necessary include the packaging.

7. Categories & Tags

Adding products randomly and publishing will make your store look clumsy and it will be difficult for your customers to search for a specific product. Categories can be used for purposes like; filtering, sorting, or grouping.

Imagine scrolling through the whole product list to find a specific product. Isn’t that tedious? And also as said before your store would also look disorderly. To solve such problems you can make use of the product categorizing.

On the right side of the panel you will find space to add and list all the categories you created. Tick the respective checkbox to select the category you want to place the product in. The same way you can add tags for the products.

8. Publish

Once you’ve added the details, make sure you review them all to ensure everything is correct. If everything looks good, the final step is to click the Publish button on the upper right corner to save all your updates.

Any changes to the product details can be made from the WooCommerce admin panel whenever necessary, but make sure to save them before leaving the page.

Customize products with Extra Product Options(Product Addons)

We all know that WooCommerce plays an important role in building up an online store. It offers basic features from adding a product to the store to tracking and analyzing the store’s revenue. WooCommerce alone can do so many things, so imagine integrating a third-party plugin or extension to get more features, your store can perform exciting tasks and can make it look appealing. Likewise products pages can be customized using The Extra Product Options for WooCommerce plugin by Themehigh.

The plugin name says it all “Extra Product Options”, that is we can create new custom sections, fields, pricing methods, etc. The plugin is mainly designed to elevate your product page, but you can make use of the fields created on other pages like cart page, checkout form, order details page (of both the customer and admin side).

We will surely learn more about Extra Product Options, but before that let’s find out how significantly the conversion rate affects by customizing using product add-ons.

How Can Product Customization Increase Conversions?

Does this question wander in your mind? Well, let us clear that doubt.

It is studied that about 70% to 90% of the new ecommerce stores fail to make their mark in the business industry. That is definitely a huge failure.

Obviously, success stories don’t start from day 1 but if you find your business at the same place as you started then there’s definitely something wrong.

According to recent statistics, the average conversion rate among e-commerce businesses in February 2022 was 1.53 percent, a 0.17 percentage point decrease from the previous month and a 0.32 percentage point decrease from a year earlier. We can blame the covid crisis for the major loss, but it turned out to be a good thing too. People started relying on online shopping methods for fear of stepping out. And so 20-30% of businesses moved online during the pandemic’s peak. Still there are many startups struggling to gain a position in the market, where mammoths like Amazon, eBay, Alibaba, AliExpress, Walmart work smoothly. Online conversion rates usually range between 1% and 2%. As your primary goal for your online store, you can attempt to achieve a 2% conversion rate. Ultimately, you have to update your strategy to remarkably increase conversion rates. Or if you already have a better conversion then you must have some tips to share.

Give your visitors the feeling that you are offering something only for them by customizing and making your webpage more personalized.

Now let’s find out how product add-ons can be used for customization.

The Extra Product Options for WooCommerce offers you woocommerce products customization using default 26 field types, you may add extra product fields and custom sections to your product page. In case you don’t want to display any particular field you created on the product page, you can hide it from the admin panel.

Don’t get wrong by the name “Product add-ons”, the fields created to display on the product page can also be displayed on cart, checkout page, order details page of customer, as well as order details page of admin.

I know what you’re thinking right now. You must be worried that this plugin serves just features like adding fields and sections. Not at all, Themehigh makes sure no user gets disappointed, so the plugin offers a lot more. Let’s explore that too.

Rather than creating fields and sections to the page normal way, you can set some conditional rules to display them. That is, you can choose to display the extra product option based on the products, categories, tags, etc. Displaying fields and sections to the page normally would be boring and may not look good on your store, so you can style the fields you created, by changing the tag, colors, position, because once you create a field it appears in normal form which may not look appealing. You can even add validators for the created fields in cases like password confirmation or any other user input data you can’t leave the field to be plain without assuring.

Another interesting feature is that sometimes you may sell some add-ons along with the main product. In such cases you’ll have to add the price of the add-on along with the main product. To make this process simpler Extra Product Options for WooCommerce plugin comes with the 7 pricing methods.

7 pricing methods:

  • Fixed
  • Custom
  • Percentage of Product
  • Dynamic Pricing
  • Dynamic
  • Character count
  • Custom Formula

Example for an extra pricing method, while you order a pizza online, you may be asked to choose any add-ons to it like cheese, thin crust, fresh pan tossed, etc. So suppose you chose thin cheese burst, then the price of that would be added along with the actual price of pizza.

Color palettes, image groups, and price tables are some other features this plugin offers. Also, the created sections and fields can be displayed in two styles; Accordion and Tab. You can also add additional content to default without having to change the main code using WooCommerce hooks.

Final Thoughts

A product is the cornerstone of a WooCommerce store. So setting up woocommerce products should be the main concern for store owners like you. This article may make those steps easier for you. You can also consider working with the above-mentioned product-based plugins for different purposes.
